Chaoshou veranda
The “Chaoshou veranda” is usually arranged along the outer circle of the courtyard close to the building. It looks like two hands crossed and clasped together, so it is called Chaoshou in Chinese. For this long term renovation, we return to the spatial form that best suits the courtyard. The layout is different from the common Chaoshou veranda, which is meeting in front of the entrance. We turned the veranda layout upside down, so that it Chaoshou under the Xiangyunsha silk hanging in front of the main house. According to the lawn blocks in the original courtyard, the veranda connects small pavilions in the four corners which adding different experiences to the process of walking. In those 4 corners, the guests can sit and rest, and they can wash their hands in the stone sinks in the summer.

Mission in 14 days
Although it is a renovation for long term use, as a heritage building, the site restrictions are still the same as the pop-up project: not a piece of original material can be damaged. At the same time, because the construction occupies retailing period, the construction can only be compressed to 14 days. Compared with the two-month construction period of the pop-up project, the requirement has increased while the conditions have become more severe.
Since no metal welding work is allowed on site, so we can only think about the construction of the main structure from the perspective of prefabricated component and on-site assembly.
"Wozhang" as tent, are essential residences for the nobles of the Han Dynasty for home travel and war. The copper connector component is used to connect the various round wooden sticks. Tent frame formed in this way is sturdy and durable. In terms of the drainage, the roof form of the phase II veranda is a single-sided slope towards the courtyard. We use the standard scaffolding tubes recycled from pop-up, and at the same time, imitate the ancient copper tent connector, customize a variety of connection node components according to the angle and the number of connected tubes. When building on site, the tubes are inserted into the components and fixed with screws, which is both fast and firm.

Reflection and diffuse reflection
In traditional culture, black represents water, symbolizing wealth and longevity. The starting point of the material is to use black as a base to give reflection and diffuse reflection. In this way the surrounding environmental colors are extracted to become part of nature and architecture.
The roof material of the veranda has a faint diffuse reflection luster, which makes the color of the sky become part of the venue, so when guests are in the central area of the courtyard, they will not feel that the newly built modern roof is too abrupt; and the suspended ceiling panels under the veranda has a stronger reflectivity, and guests can see the blurred reflection of the trees and the facade of the ancient building at the end of the veranda.

Recycle from pop-up
We did our best to reuse materials recycled from the pop-up demolition: steel tube, flooring stone, glazed roof tiles, Xiangyunsha silk, translucent curtains, and outdoor spotlights. 100 roof glazed tiles were not used in pop-up due to design changes and have been kept in the warehouse since then. This time we use them as a key element in street lamps and circular coffee table.
The street lamps are not direct light, but use the reflection of spotlights shining on the tiles to render the overall brightness. Its shape and lighting method are both referenced to ancient palace lanterns; the shape of the coffee table is taken from the fire pit, and we installed heating facilities under the coffee table. In cold winter weather, guests can keep warm by the coffee table in the courtyard.
The Xiangyunsha silk is re-cut into curtain screens. The curtain screen is also a common space separation technique in ancient buildings. When the curtain is completely hung, folded, or removed, the overall color tone and enclosure of the courtyard will also change.
